Delegates to the 2009 Annual General Meeting of the Air Force Association of Canada, and special guests including air force awardees, were treated to a spectacular venue for the Annual Awards Banquet. The National Air Force Museum of Canada, home of the Royal Canadian Air Force Memorial Collection and Air Park, was an outstanding venue. As a sign of respect association members donated $15,000 to the museum.
The Marking of the 100th anniversary of flight is a significant milestone for Canada, and for the Air Force Association of Canada. Respect for aviation heritage in part defines the association, and what its members do. Air force-minded people join the Air Force Association of Canada to share a unique air force identity and common experiences. This process assures that they become a source of important air force information, ideas and initiatives. Alexis de Tocqueville marvelled at this phenomenon, when in 1830 he wrote Democracy in America. He remarked how readily individuals affiliate with one another to propose a common object, to inculcate some truth or to foster some feeling by the encouragement of a great example. Respectively: many would agree that a common object to which members of the Air Force Association of Canada are devoted is a well-equipped, well-trained and operationally ready Canadian air force; a truth which members wish to inculcate in all Canadians is that such an air force is critical for their security; and, finally, from its earliest days, the foremost example, of such an air force, on which has been derived great encouragement, and which continues to evoke a feeling of pride, has been the war-time era Royal Canadian Air Force. Since then, thousands of Canadians have added to this bedrock example of an air force, as evidenced by the dedication and commitment of the men and women who have served and continue to serve in Canada’s air force through countless peacekeeping operations and combat around the world – altogether a great source of pride for all Canadians. It is to celebrate this history and heritage for which we gather, during the Annual General Meeting of the Air Force Association of Canada to be held in Trenton, ON from 16 to 18 October 2009.
